How to Optimize Your Company’s Website for Mobile Devices

Mobile SEO Optimization“Only 16 percent of marketers out of 250 global marketers surveyed have developed a mobile strategy aimed at building customer engagement.”

This was the report of a survey done by the CMO Council considering 250 global marketers. And the outcome is not satisfactory at all. It’s just worse-case scenario and may be an alarm for the companies who tend to cement their places as top-level brands. Soon they will understand the value of having a mobile-optimized website.

It seems that by 2014 almost 50% of the total Internet browsing will be made through mobile devices. The mobile industry is in a rapid growth. Everything will be controlled on the go. So there is no doubt why mobile devices will come very handy.

Where are you? What is your status now? Do build a version of your brand’s website to suit the mobile devices before others do it and gain from it. Read on the post to know the steps to perform your company’s mobile optimization.

Step-1: Know Google’s Recommendations.

Google actually supports mobile-optimized sites in three ways such as,

  1. Sites that use responsive web designs. Responsive design means the approach in which a site is made to provide an optimal viewing experience across a wide range of devices. Step-2 will cover it in more details.
  2. Sites serving all devices on the same set of URLs dynamically where each URL different HTML and CSS with respect to the device (a desktop or a mobile).
  3. Sites having separate set of URLs for mobiles and desktops.

So companies will be benefited by following these recommendations of Google       and the major search engines.

Step-2: Develop a Responsive Design or Theme.

As you already know that a responsive design is an approach to build a website that supports a wide range of devices ranging from desktops to mobiles with easy access (in navigation, scrolling, panning and resizing etc.). Also in this design method the sites serve all the devices with the same set of URLs.

Here the same HTML is used for all the devices with little changes in the CSS for different devices.

Then how will you facilitate this? It can be done in two ways.

  1. Purchase a website design theme having built-in responsive options, or
  2. Talk with your web developer to have a custom responsive version of your site.

Of course the latter one is expensive than the first one. Purchasing a standard template will serve the purpose with low budget.

Step-3: Few Do’s and Don’ts for your site pages.

While designing your optimized site you should take care of the following points.

  • Check the Scrolling problem. I don’t like to scroll on the page to view the full content. It’s too much boring for me. Same way all users want to see the full content in one sight. So it should best fit the screen. You have to design your pages accordingly. If it’s a long page-content, then break it and shift some texts to the next page.
  • Avoid useless info. Nobody actually shows interest in viewing your complete history. The information must be to the point. If you are a travel agency, then give info about the vehicles, your address and the places you cover. Who cares for your no. of employees? So carefully feature your site contents.
  • Don’t show images in pixels. Show the images in percentages on the page instead of pixels. It will not hamper your mobile displays and your responsive design.
  • Have option to switch to your desktop version. While designing the site do remember to keep option to view your full desktop version. There are some readers want to view your full site.
  • Carefully place the calls-to-action buttons. In mobile devices these buttons and statements should be put at the left-hand top instead of the bottom-right corner. So carefully include these calls-to-action buttons.

Step-4: Do Follow Mobile SEO Strategies.

Basically mobile SEO strategies are almost same as that of the standard desktops. So the same conditions apply in mobile sites such as all the pages should have the proper title, Meta description and the headline tags too. Still there are few areas where mobile SEOs may differ slightly.

  • Mobile keywords may differ. There are many reasons why users may enter different search queries in mobiles than desktop search engine pages. So here you can take the help of Google Analytics tool to detect the keywords.
  • High ranking is all you want. Your site should be optimized to be displayed on any of the top 3 search result listings. Unless your total click-through rate will be less.
  • Your site must contain compact HTML and XHTML files. While indexing your pages Googlebot, web crawler software used by Google, searches your Doc Type for the file formats. It’s OK that the responsive design templates add these files automatically; still they should be readily available and unblocked.

These guidelines will really work for your businesses. Believe me in the recent future everything is going to be handled through smartphones. Business companies must design mobile-friendly sites. Optimized sites will definitely get good amount of traffic.
